OUR STORY
It’s estimated that over 3 million dogs live in the streets in Greece. This is a national problem with little support from the government for the people and organizations trying to care for these animals. Most of the animals you see on the streets of Greek towns were abandoned and left to fend for themselves by their families who could no longer afford to care for them. Many more continue to reproduce in the streets making the situation worse. They are constantly exposed to dangers. Some are hit by cars and left by the road to die; puppies are thrown into garbage containers; dogs thrown from moving cars; and worse, some are being poisoned. But the good news is some brave people are trying to help these poor souls with whatever resources are available to them.
We experienced this sad reality first hand in a recent trip to Porto Rafti, Greece, a beautiful area near Athens. There, we met a group of women who every day go around town feeding the many dogs who live in their streets. These compassionate and caring women built an outdoor shelter for the most needy dogs and puppies but there isn’t enough room at the shelter or funds to help them all, forcing them to leave many more strays on the streets. They do miracles to find the funds necessary to pay for the many visits to the vet.
We hope to inspire you to adopt, sponsor or fund their efforts. We will share their stories and pictures and hope you find it in your heart to make a difference for these innocent creatures. 100% of all donations will go directly to the shelter in Porto Rafti
